DRY LAND TRAINING
Dryland
Dryland classes will cover specific skills and abilities for figure skaters. Core strength, upper/lower body speed and power as well as body awareness are developed through the use of various exercises that are specific to the demands of jumping. Technical enhancement through positioning and timing is trained through dry land jumping. Also included will be flexibility and some ballet training that is required for the artistic routines in figure skating as well as some light conditioning. Proper footwear and skipping ropes are required.
Athletics – Taught by Andrew Lenton.
This class is designed to train the specific athletic abilities that figure skating requires. Coordination and balance are vital to the sport as well as training speed strength, strength endurance.
The athletics program is designed to improve skating performance by increasing dynamic, functional strength, explosive power, core stability, balance, coordination, aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, injury prevention, speed, agility and quickness, all using age appropriate guidelines ensuring safe and effective athletic development. This class is extremely beneficial to athletes involved in more than one sport.
Incorporating regular dry land training into an athlete’s annual training plan will help ensure that our members are doing all that they can to achieve their own level of personal excellence. It also ensures that young figure skaters recognize that dry land training is part of training for our sport.
With limited amounts of ice time, dry land training is the key to the development of our skaters.
